Chapter Twenty

Bailey crossed to the window and looked out toward the street, where she could see Sabrina West pacing the sidewalk and staring down at her phone. Wondering who within the Belle Harbor PD had been feeding the reporter information, she made a mental note to find out before turning her attention back to Erin and Pierre Devereaux, who were attempting to answer Fraser’s questions about their daughter’s disappearance.

“So, the last time you saw Prudie was last night just after dusk?” Fraser asked. “And she said she was going to a concert at Summerset Park?”

Erin held a shredded tissue to her eyes and nodded.

“When I woke up this morning and went to her room, she wasn’t there. I could see she’d never come home. I went to the park and looked everywhere.”

She sucked in a deep, wet breath.

“They didn’t even have an outdoor concert last night,” Erin said, her voice filled with hurt. “Prudie lied to me.”

“Do you have any idea where she might go?” Bailey cut in. “Has she ever gone missing or disappeared before?”

Shaking her head, Erin started to reply but was cut off as Pierre stepped forward.

“I’m sure Prudie is absolutely fine,” he insisted in a voice heavily laced with a French accent. “She is probably with her friend Annabelle somewhere.”

Prudie’s stepfather sounded more annoyed than worried.

“That girl isn’t a very good influence on our Prudie,” Pierre continued. “I’ve warned her to be careful.”

Bailey raised an eyebrow.

“You’ve heard that Annabelle Gallagher is missing, right? I mean, you must have seen the stories on the news.”

Erin looked blankly at her and then at Pierre before shaking her head in confusion.

“I don’t watch much news,” she said. “I didn’t know…”

“But Annabelle’s father called here on Monday,” Fraser said. “He spoke to your husband, I believe.”

Pointing at Pierre, he frowned.

“You must have known Annabelle was missing,” he said. “You told Mr. Gallagher that Annabelle wasn’t at your house and that Prudie hadn’t seen her lately.”

Pierre held up his hands in surrender.

“Okay, I admit that I didn’t ask Prudie about the call from Mr. Gallagher. I assumed Annabelle was on another one of her drug binges and I didn’t want Prudie involved. I didn’t know Annabelle was officially considered a missing person.”

Ignoring his wife’s startled look, Pierre exhaled calmly and turned to Bailey.

“Do you have any idea where Annabelle’s gone?”

“We have reason to suspect she’s been the victim of foul play,” Bailey said. “If there’s any chance Prudie is with her or that she tried to find her, she could be in danger, too.”

She motioned toward Ludwig.

“That’s why we brought a search and rescue dog,” she said. “We want to track Prudie to see if we can figure out where she might have gone.”

“Is that really necessary?” Pierre asked. “She’s not been gone for twenty-four hours yet. Don’t you think-”

Erin’s voice drowned out her husband’s protests.

“Yes, please look for her,” she said. “Please find my girl.”

Her voice shook with emotion.

“Okay,” Bailey said. “Is there something of Prudie’s we can use? A
